Our Organic Ground Nutmeg is sourced from the seeds of an evergreen-like tree that is native to the spice islands of Indonesia. This spice is known for its spicy-sweetness that is often used in conjunction with allspice, cloves, and cinnamon--particularly in holiday treats and baked goods. Despite its iconic pairing with these other spices, the powerfully aromatic qualities and irresistible tastes of our all-natural nutmeg can be incorporated on its own into a variety of dishes, helping bring the natural flavors of both sweet and savory dishes to an all new level of mouth-watering awesomeness!
Nutmegs usage first became prominent in historical text during the medieval era where it was commonly used to boost the flavor of bland dishes. The centuries that followed this era, the spice gained increased popularity with Dutch and English traders engaging in a bloody competition over control of this beloved spice. Since then the spice has spread in popularity to cuisines all over the world, with global production estimated between 10,000 and12,000 tons annually.
This spice has long been praised for its medicinal properties, and has been used to relieve a large variety of ailments in ancient times. Today, many of these claims have failed to stand up to clinical studies, but several benefits are still believed to be associated with its consumption ranging from helping blood circulation, to aiding digestion. The spice is also a source of thiamin, magnesium, and vitamin B6.
Using at Home
When using our all-natural nutmeg at home, the most obvious direction to go is holiday baked goods. This famous application of the spices is often associated with its three best friends: cloves, cinnamon, and allspice. This quad is a deliciously traditional way to spice up holiday treats of all kinds, and can also be taken in the savory direction to spice up pork dishes, sweet potatoes, and squash. While nutmeg is often times called for in pair with other spices, this powerful spice also stands up well on its own with a range of robustly complex flavors that are sure to bring your next pot of coffee, batch of quinoa, grilled chicken breast, or stir fried veggies to a whole new level of lip-smacking!
